Safe, clean water is fundamental to life. Yet even today 1.8 billion people in developing countries in Africa and Asia use a water source that is contaminated with waterborne diseases like diarrhoea, cholera, dysentery, typhoid and polio. Together these diseases results in the preventable deaths of 4,000 children every single day.  

As well as being one of the worlds biggest killers, dirty water can trap entire communities in a cycle of poverty. Building a well not only transforms a community's health, it also improves their prospects as women and children (who traditionally perform the task of fetching water often from long distances) can perform other tasks such as raising a family and working on the land. Children can attend school to help them bring themselves out of poverty.

In many areas, shallow tube wells can be a life saver. However, in some areas such as Gambia, Somalia and Bangladesh, safe water is buried many meters underground. These communities often don't have the resources or the expertise to build wells to reach the clean water that could be the difference between life and death.

Having lived in a developing country I have seen directly the impact of dirty water. Having children of my own, I cannot contemplate the thought of losing any of them, especially when its preventable.

Therefore, I have decided to trek up to the highest mountain in Africa, Kilimanjaro in December 2017 to raise funds to build deep water wells and to help transform thousands of lives. Building a deep water well provides access to safe, clean water for years to come thereby benefitting generations.
