Story
So I'm the selfish bugger who went & got himself a dose of very rare cancer & caused all his mates to have to cycle & climb their way across Wales in an attempt to raise money & awareness for NET cancer!!
In fairness, it wasn't my idea. After my diagnosis for NET cancer the bonds struck on a rugby field re-ignited & a group of my old rugby friends rallied around & came to my aid, with several social evenings to draw my focus away from the turmoil of cancer. At one of them I suggested a small charity event for the NET cancer patients foundation but in true Edwardian's team style the boys morphed it into a full on challenge of coast to coast Wales cycle ride with a few mountain climbs thrown in for good measure. Ironically the person who suggested it (Mr McLoughlin) is the very person who is suffering the most during the training!!!
I was very pleased to be able to start training for the event given the news I'd received, & was extremely sad to hear that the timing of my latest bout of chemo is preventing me from actively participating in the challenge. My focus now (pending results of my next scan) is to get fit enough to complete the 100 mile single day velo in September.
In the dark days post my diagnosis the NET foundation provided my wife with the link she needed to help understand my condition & give her a route to communicate with people who understood our plight. Obviously many people in my position can be overcome with the magnitude of what is happening to them & the NET foundation are there to support, along with many other valuable contributions. I am fortunate that my pig-headed obstinacy is dictating that I afford little time to worry of what is to come & I concentrate only on how I feel today (which is great) & enjoying every moment to the full, but I'm only too aware that there are many who are less advantaged than I.
So for my friends, some of whom will be in a world of pain soon, & for all those who are unfortunate to receive a diagnosis of NET cancer please give generously, & take comfort in the fact that at some point in the future you will have contributed to reducing someone's pain. Many thanks
