Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

In January 2016 I was diagnosed with Oesophageal Cancer.

Fortunately for me this was caught early. I had a major operation, an oesophagectomy, in April 2016 which removed the cancer and most of my oesophagus with it.

It has been a long road to recovery which I am still on but am getting better all the time.

Together with my mate David Morley I have decided to do this cycle ride for charity. It is almost 300 miles over 4 days in Holland and Belgium. This will be a serious challenge for me.

I am one of the lucky ones though and I know others with this cancer have not been (and most of you may know of other people as well).

I am raising money for the Health Tree Foundation charity that works in partnership with the Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust covering the Grimsby, Scunthorpe & Goole area.

Half the money raised by Dave and myself with go to Oesophageal Cancer and help support those with this condition.

The other half will go to the Health Tree Foundation's Maternity Bereavement Suite Appeal for Scunthorpe Hospital's Maternity Unit.

My wife, Jane, is a midwife who works at Scunthorpe. She is one of those leading this appeal.

Nothing will ever take away the pain of giving birth to a still born baby, or giving birth to a baby who only has a few hours to live, but imagine the utter distress a family in this situation will feel if they are returned to a ward where new mothers and fathers are celebrating the birth of their healthy babies.

This is currently what happens at Scunthorpe General Hospital. Please help us to provide a Bereavement Suite within the Central Delivery Suite at the Hospital.  This Suite will provide a safe haven for mothers who have just given birth to a still born baby or mothers who have only a few hours to spend with their newborn child before it passes away.  It will be a place where the family can spend time together too.

I need to raise as much as possible by June 2017 in order to participate in this event. Please give generously.

Thank you

Ian
