Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Three years ago I got knocked off my bike and had to give up activities I loved like cycling and running. I was introduced to swimming at Tooting Bec Lido last summer as an alternative and have been hooked ever since, enduring (sorry, enjoying) ever more chilly swims in the snow and ice with water temperature as low as one degree (one!) over winter. Okay, a dodgy neck means I use a snorkel so I can keep it stable but it still counts, right?

Not being able to do the things I want to has been frustrating and annoying but it's nothing compared to what those living with motor neurone disease must bear. If pushing my new boundaries can help raise awareness and support those living with MND then the challenge is worth aiming for.

This is what the Queen’s Harbour Master Portsmouth has to say about it: ‘Swimming across The Solent should not be undertaken without considerable preparation & very careful assessment of the risk. The cross-Solent swimmer has to cross at least one busy shipping lane, taking into account fast moving ferries & hovercraft travelling to & from the Isle of Wight, some of the largest vessels in the world transiting the deep water channel & the many recreational craft that use the area. In addition, tidal streams within The Solent are significant at times & must be carefully factored into any risk assessment.’

Reading this is concerning. Knowing I learned to swim late in life due to a deep-seated water phobia and have only swum in the sea once (Feb 2017, in a tutu - another story) makes it absolutely terrifying. Please make this huge personal challenge worth my while but more importantly worth it for the Ian Pratt MND Foundation. Thank you :o)
