One morning in 2003, I woke up to some loud cheering outside the window of the student halls in Newcastle I had moved into a few days before. Confused and slightly terrified, I was relieved to find this was not the result of the too many pints of "diesel" the night before, but in fact the start of the Great North Run. Phew. Back then, I never would have imagined that I would be on that start line one day!

So on the 10th September 2017, I will be running those 13.1 miles in memory of Dave, who will have been gone by then for almost a year. This is just a small thing I can do, and I will be thinking of Dave every step of the way, along with his family and friends who have already raised an incredible amount of money for the Motor Neurone Disease Association.

Dave did so much in his too-short life - even when in the grip of this horrible disease he climbed blummin' Kilimanjaro! He will always be an inspiration to me. I miss him a lot.
