We provide help and hope to everyone living with dementia.

Story

Around 225,000 people develop dementia every year – that’s the equivalent to one person every three minutes.

My nanny is sadly one of those people. She developed Vascular Dementia when she started having heart problems around 3 or 4 years ago. At the time we simply put her forgetfulness down to her age. As I think most others find, the situation only grew worse and my granddad hid my nanny's condition perfectly. Before his death in 2013, we had no way of knowing nanny needed so much help.

My nanny is now in the late stages of Dementia and unable to do anything for herself. My mum works tirelessly to keep her safe and happy despite the fact that my nanny has no idea who she is and what she has given up to protect her. I do my bit where I can, checking in on her, taking her out and feeding her when my mum is at work.

I know she won't ever be the person I remember growing up, and I've accepted that sad reality but the suffering that it causes not only my nanny, but the rest of my family is sometimes unbearable. I am taking part in the Norwich Memory Walk to walk towards a world without dementia one step at a time.

This September and October Memory Walks will be taking place across England, Wales and Northern Ireland to raise money for a world without dementia. Arm in arm, step by step and pound by pound, we will get there. Once you donate, Just Giving will send your money directly to the Alzheimer's Society. So it’s the most efficient way to raise money – saving time and cutting costs for the charity. Please dig deep and help us walk for a world without dementia.
