Story
In December 2015, I was diagnosed with stage III bowel cancer. I am 30 years old. I am fit. I lead a healthy lifestyle. I ran up Box Hill in Surrey just two days before my diagnosis and had recently completed a through the night, 310 mile cycle ride from Newcastle to London. I am the embodiment of how indiscriminate this awful disease can be.
Since my diagnosis I have had surgery to remove the tumour and I am midway through a six month course of chemotherapy. Despite the treatment, I'm determined to complete the 10km course round Clapham Common. The fitness I had built up before my diagnosis has meant that I've been able to fight through every stage of my treatment. Team #onestrongheart are #fitforafight and stand for the importance of maintaining your health and fitness not only to ward off disease but also to be ready, if and when the bad luck strikes, and you have to fight with everything you've got.
I have got through this far with the help and support of my incredible family and friends. I have also spoken to Cancer Research UK's patient support line who answered many of the questions that swirled around my head and I know that their research has contributed to the care and recovery path I am on.
Less than six months ago, I raised money for charity riding an unimaginable distance, 310 miles, on a bicycle and was busy planning my next major endurance challenge. I never imagined I would be asking you to support my running 'only' 10k but the achievement will be even greater as the chemotherapy continues to ravage my systems in, what I'm confident will be, a successful fight against this dreadful disease.
