Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit Maddy & Vin's JustGiving page.

This is the first fundraising run that Maddy and I have entered together, inspired by this great cause http://elizabethslegacyofhope.org/

There are 40 million child amputees worldwide, 90% of whom are unable to attend school, and only 5% of whom have access to prosthetic limbs. The maths is simple, every pound raised matters - e.g. £80 will provide one above-knee prosthetic limb – enabling a child to walk!

These young people are the focus of a charity founded and run by one of the parents from St George's School (Harpenden), named “Elizabeth’s Legacy of Hope”. The Hope family were involved in a road traffic accident which caused the loss of one life in the family and a young child losing a limb, and this has led them to a highly successful national campaign to raise funds for children in Tanzania, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and India. The charity supports over 300 children, and has also supported the training of a surgeon in Tanzania who has treated over a thousand young people.

The event will take place at St George’s School Harpenden on the morning of Saturday 23rd April 2016.

Whether through war, landmines, illness or accident, there are tens of thousands of young people each year worldwide who lose limbs with none of that access to treatment or support. Every day, young amputees watch from the side lines because they cannot join in their friends’ games. Every day young amputees hide indoors because of the embarrassment and stigma of being different. Every day young amputees miss out on education because they cannot get to school.
