Story

Hello and thank you for taking the time to visit our Just Giving Page. This year Alan and I will be taking part in the Round Britain Reliability Run raising money for Guide Dogs. This is an amazing charity that works tirelessly to help others.

This will be my 5th event, and we are doing the event in a rather unique car. This car has undergone some major surgery, there has been blood, sweat, and many tears thrown into the mix… possibly more sweat than tears.

This year, 2016, I am proud to announce I am taking place with my trusty co-pilot Alan Chatterton in his prototype Triumph Stag Estate. Anyone in the know about Triumphs will know that a Stag is not an estate, however many many moons back a rather creative genius decided a Downton tuned Stag V8 would look good in the engine bay of a Mk2 estate. And thus Libby was born.

Libby is the car Alan has been drooling over ever since he was 17, the first time he saw it in his classic car magazine he wanted it. Many of us have been in this situation, however how many have managed to do anything about it. The chance came 6 years ago when Mr Roberts found the car in Switzerland. Alan called, struck a deal and off we went. After some creative bodywork by Brian the paint was applied, the vinyl roof replaced, and the car returned to Alan.

Now the fun began.

It’s been years of work, good times and bad, many trials andtribulations, and achievements that cannot be matched, however she is done and ready for the RBRR 2016.

The Round Britain Reliability Run is an event held once every 2 years, the event is not only a test for the mechanics of our classic 1970’s Triumph Stag Estate but also for ourselves. This is an endurance event where we aim to drive just over 2000 miles within a 48 hour period, there are no overnight stops, just the two of us taking turns behind the wheel. This year we are starting in Enfield, heading up to John O’Groats, back down to Land’s End and finishing in Knebworth, Hertfordshire.

We set off on the 7th October 2016 with our target of 17 checkpoints in sight. Once we are going there are very few stops, other than the checkpoints, fuel stops, mechanical check-ups, and two breakfast stops we don’t rest till the Sunday evening at 19:00. Whomever isn’t driving isresting their eyes, sleep is a luxury but not a given. Prior to the event most supermarkets notice an increase in the sales of energy drinks and energising snack foods.

Why do we do it?

What possible enjoyment can we get from driving 2000 milesin 48 hours?

The answer…

Camaraderie, passion, friendship, purpose, and the Charity.

In 2014 we used my Triumph aptly named Eric, we fought our way round battling one problem after the other, severe loss of power, timing, carb failure (it’s amazing what you can do with several well placed zip ties) and points going. However this in turn bought with it new friendship, new relationships, and our convoy is a strong one, many different cars are involved, and so much is learnt.

Please donate to an awesome charity, Guide Dogs are there to help those less fortunate than ourselves, they are lifelines that affect people’s lives more than anyone can fathom.

Since 1990 the event has had a charitable basis and has raised over £510,000.00 for various UK charities. In 2014 the event raised £59,500.00 for Macmillan Cancer Support.

This year Club Triumph wishes to raise a sum of over £60.000, however it would be great to raise £90,000.00 and therefore push the grand total of raising over £600.000! Please support Guide Dogs by making a pledge using Just Giving. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity. So it’s the most efficient way to donate, saving time and cutting costs for the charity.

The ability to get around is vital in order to live a full life yet thousands of people with sight loss never leave home alone. We empower visually impaired people to do that and rely on the support of the public to fund the guide dog service.
