In June this year I have been mad enough to have agreed to what is as far as I'm concerned the equivalent of jumping off Guildford Cathedral despite being slightly afraid of heights ( which is why I avoided Mrs Miguda's kind offer a couple of years ago and didn't make it to the top of the Eiffel Tower with the lovely Abraham family) and within a few short weeks before having my ankle operated on - oh well, this might hasten the appointment.

So why would I want to do this?

Every year we go to Cornwall on holiday for surfing (well the kids surf and I bodyboard but surfing sounds better) and we have a ''no lifeguard no sea' policy. It's not just for fun and because I'm a fussy over protective parent (fact) but also because over the years we've seen so many incidents that would have had very different outcomes had the RNLI not been there including quite an elderly lady this year who was in her 70/80's happily bodyboarding until a stronger wave took her out and she dislocated her shoulder. Luckily for her the lifeguards were there to bring her in and arrange for help.

I want to be able to continue enjoying my holidays knowing that there is someone else far stronger and more experienced than me who is also keeping an eye out for my kids and I also want to still have the confidence that I can bodyboard in my 80's with someone looking out for me and this is our RNLI without whom I'd probably still be building sandcastle a on the beach. And this is also my chance to give something back to them too to say thank you for being there.
