Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Phil and I both survived Sepsis. When I had it in 2013 I didn't know what it was. I wasn't even told I had it at the time.

We will be cycling from Lincoln to London via Cambridge over two days. The first day will be 100 miles (160km) and the second day about 80 miles (130km). Whilst Phil's heavily into cycling, the last time I cycled anywhere near these distances was 31 years ago. I also don't yet have a road bike, so I'm using my little hybrid. Might even buy some lycra...

Sepsis is an emergency. 37000 people die of sepsis every year in the UK. More people die of sepsis than lung, breast and prostate cancer combined. Every hour it isn't diagnosed and dealt with reduces the chances of survival drastically. I feel I owe my survival in parts to an awareness of Sepsis at the hospital ward where I was. This isn't a given. It wasn't for Phil.

Awareness amongst medial staff as well as the general public is key to reducing the impact Sepsis has on people.

All over the country, people will be Cycling for Sepsis either in memory of loved ones, other survivors as well as medical staff. We will be converging onto Westminster where we will meet with all the other teams to lobby Parliament and mark World Sepsis Day in the UK.

Sepsis accounts for 48,000 deaths annually in the UK, that’s more than breast, bowel and prostate cancer put together. Sepsis is what happens when our immune system overreacts to an infection. Symptoms initially present as flu like but can rapidly deteriorate into a life threatening condition.
