Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

After a break of almost 10 years I have been persuaded to step into a rowing boat again. This time however, rather than "plodding" down a 2000m course, the challenge is to be part of a team completing 140km  around the coast of Singapore on 22nd April. We expect that the challenge will take 24 hours to complete.

In honour of Singapore's maritime history we will be rowing a Cornish Pilot Gig. This is a very "heavy" traditional boat that was in use from the 17th century as a general workboat and as a lifeboat. As such, a more old fashioned rowing technique is used, utilising only the upper body and a sort of half sit up motion. We expect that at the end of the challenge each of the crew members will have taken more than 17,000 strokes and performed the same number of half sit ups !  I suspect my six pack will however still be hidden from view.....

A short video on the boats used, and one of an early training session (so excuse the technique and timing) can be found at the links below:

In addition to the physical challenge we will be faced with temperatures of more than 32 degrees, 80%+ humidity, the odd tropical thunderstorm, rowing in one of the busiest shipping channels in the world and crocodiles (they live in the waters in the north of the island.....)

The event is taking place as part of Singapore's 50th anniversary celebrations but more importantly to raise funds for the Mission to Seafarers. This is a charity that looks after the interests of seafarers around the world and in times of need, regardless of nationality, race or religion. Many of the crew members for the challenge work in the maritime/shipping industry in one form or another and we often see first hand the hardships and dangers that seafarers must endure in getting the everyday things we rely on from port to port. We therefore all view it as a charity worth supporting and I would greatly appreciate your assistance once more in finding those coins down the back of your sofa to throw into the pot.
