Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Back in the autumn I had hoped to run a half marathon as part of the 160k-in-a-day my work fundraising group, the pink panthers http://pinkpanthers4refuge.org.uk/ but unfortunately I succumbed to a bout of the winter 'flu a couple of days before and couldn't make it. Thus, as penance, I submit myself to running through glorious Watford on the first day of February, somewhere I've never been to before (well...I don't think passing through on the train counts)...so it's something of an adventure...to the wilds north of London.

Anyway. I digress. I am running in support of Refuge, (http://www.refuge.org.uk/) a marvellous charity who pioneered women's refuges in the UK way back in 1971, and are now the UK's leading charity in the fight against domestic abuse, both in terms of advocacy and daily support of people suffering its effects.

Sadly domestic violence remains a problem. Here are some facts taken from Refuge's website about its impact:

  • 2 women are killed every week in England and Wales by a current or former partner (Homicide Statistics, 1998) – 1 woman killed every 3 days
  • 1 in 4 women experience domestic violence over their lifetimes and between 6-10% of women suffer domestic violence in a given year (Council of Europe, 2002)

  • So, please, anything you could give to support Refuge, whilst I run through the likely cold and rain of a winter's morning in Watford will be most gratefully received. I know in the past year I've asked for donations for a half marathon in Madrid and a marathon in Chester, and I am so thankful for the support I've received so far, but if you have the resources to spare even a small donation this time, you will genuinely help to make a difference to the lives of people suffering.

    Thanks for reading.
