Fundraising for Reverse Rett
Story

Ich habe drei Jahre in Glasgow, Schottland, gelebt, und hatte dort das große Glück, Gunter Löffler und seine Familie kennenzulernen. Gunter hat meine Promotionsarbeit mitbetreut, und wir sind in der Zeit Freunde geworden. Gunters jüngste Tochter, Romi, hat eine Krankheit, die sich Rett-Syndrom nennt, und aus einer Spontanmutation eines Gens resultert. Romi hat sich wie die meisten Betroffenen des Rett Syndroms zunächst normal entwickelt, dann trat nach einer Stagnationsphase ein Verlust bereits erlernter Fähigkeiten ein. Das ist schlimm für Romi, und es wäre schön, wenn ein Mittel gegen das Rett Syndrom gefunden würde. Da ich selber nicht Genforscher bin, und da sich mein Wissen über Gene darauf beschränkt, dass sie aussehen wie ein krakeliges "X" (oder bei denen mit weniger Glück auch ein "Y"), möchte ich versuchen, mit dem 10.000 m Lauf wenigstens Geld für Forschung gegen das Rett Syndrom zu sammeln. Das Tolle an der Sache ist: es hat gerade einen Durchbruch gegeben: bei Tieren konnte das Rett-Syndrom bereits mit einem neu entwickelten Medikament geheilt werden. Jetzt kommt die heiße Forschungsphase, wo das Medikament für den Menschen verändert und getestet wird, und die kostet Geld.
Also Leute, wenn Ihr auch wollt, dass Romi bald sprechen lernt, dann lasst Euch nicht lumpen, und sponsort mich auf diesem Lauf. Jeder Pence Eurer Spende geht in das Forschungsprojekt, weil die Spendenaktion von Eltern der betroffenen Kinder organisiert wird, die dafür natürlich alle kein Geld nehmen. Und ich laufe einfach nicht gut genug, als dass man mir Startgeld für einen 10.000 m-Lauf zahlt :-)
Also, raus mit der Kreditkarte und fleißig gespendet für den Great Scottish Run des Halbschotten Christian.
Übrigens: Wenn ich mein Ziel von 1000 € Spenden erreiche, mache ich den Lauf im Kilt, wie ein echter Schotte ;-) Es liegt also an Euch...

I lived in Glasgow, Scotland, for three years, and was lucky enough to meet Gunter Loffler and his family. Gunter co-supervised my PhD thesis, and we became friends. Gunter's youngest daughter, Romi, was born with a disease called Rett Syndrome, resulting from a spontaneous mutation of a gene. Baby Romi started developing normally for the first few months of her life, but then, like in most girls affected with Rett, there was a phase of stagnation and then a loss of some capabilities. This is terrible for Romi, and I would be very happy if a cure for Rett Syndrome could be found. Since I am not a genetic researcher, and all I know about genes is that they look like a wiggly x (or y in the less fortunate of us), I would at least like to try and raise some Anti-Rett-research-funding with the 10k run. The great thing is: there recently was a scientific breakthrough: in animals, Rett syndrome could successfully be cured with a newly developed drug. Now we need money for the hot research phase where the drug needs to be modified and tested for human use, and that costs a lot of money.
So, guys, if you, too, want Romi to learn how to speak, don't be a miser and sponsor me for this run. Every pence of your donation goes into the research project, because the fundraising is done by parents of the children with Rett, who do not want money for their work. And I simply am not a fast enough runner in order to get paid for running the 10k :-)
So out with your credit cards, and donate what you like for Christian the Half-Scot's Great Scottish Run.
By the way: if I achieve my fundraising goal of 1000€, I will do the 10 k in a kilt, like a real Scot ;-) It's up to you...
