Optoms Cycling for Sight was started in 2011 by Bradford University student optometrists Jessica MacIssac, Fares Hatoum and Abubakr Patel to raise money for Optometry Giving Sight. In 2011 the cyclists travelled from Glasgow Caledonian University to Cardiff University, stopping at each mainland UK optometry department on the way and raising £2875.

In 2012 the route extended to almost 1000 miles by starting at the new optometry department in Plymouth University and finishing at Glasgow Caledonian University. I joined them from Appleby to Moffat and helped raise £3300.

Last year, led by Fares Hatoum and Gemma Hill the whole optical profession took part in the challenge - organising their own cycling events over a week at the end of August. They raised £12,500.  

The goal this year is to raise £25,000; £1 for every mile of the circumference of the earth.

Perceptive, has helped arrange a headline event which will see a bunch of keen riders cycle the whole of the 190Km route of stage 1 of the Tour de France from Leeds to Harrogate - with a bit of CET along the way. If that sounds too much there's a 100Km alternative starting with lunch in the beautiful village of Hawes, which still takes in 'Le col du Buttertub', and a 50Km leisure ride starting near Leyburn providing a wonderfully-flat bimble to Harrogate.
