The Five Peaks in 48 Hours Challenge · 3 July 2014
Thanks for taking the time to visit my page.
You've probably heard of the 3 Peaks Challenge, but are less likely to have come across the 5 Peaks Challenge. Why? Well, because it's not attempted very often, as not too many people are daft enough to tackle it - which is where I come in!
What is the 5 Peaks Challenge? It comprises climbing the traditional 3 Peaks of Snowdon (Wales), Scafell Pike (England), Ben Nevis (Scotland), with the highest mountains in Ireland, Slieve Donard (Northern Ireland) and Carrauntoohil (Rep of Ireland), thrown in for good measure. Then comes the really challenging part - it's all got to be completed within 48 hours. It really is the road less travelled!
Coupled with the logistical nightmare is the fact that I am no longer the active, rugby playing solider I once was - and even then, tackling Snowdon, Scafell Pike, Ben Nevis, Slieve Donard and Carrauntoohil in 48 hours would have been a serious challenge. Now, however, I'm a desk-flying civvie with a broken back, and dragging myself up the highest mountains in the British Isles - non-stop over two days - fills me with absolute dread!
So why am I doing it then? Well, it's for a vital cause, that's why. Unemployment is one of the biggest problems facing society today and with over 1 million under-25s in the UK out of work, the growth of a 'Lost Generation' of unemployed threatens to have catastrophic consequences for all our futures. I'm working with the charity Tomorrow's People, who are dedicated to getting the most disadvantaged unemployed people in the hardest to reach parts of our communities into jobs, breaking the cycle of generational worklessness. Tomorrow's People rely on the public's generosity to do their great work, so 48 hours of pain is a small price for me to pay to help their cause.
So, even if it is out of a morbid fascination to hear how much pain I go through, please dig deep, donate to a great cause and sponsor me up those peaks!
Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - I raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.
Thanks so much for donating,
Kevin
