Story

Hi all,

I decided to enter the Wiggle Purbecks Hill-A-Saurus with some friends from work as it looked like a great challenge and a lot of fun!

The Hill-A-Saurus is a mountain bike ride in the Purbecks, 26 miles long, including 2227 ft elevation gain in the mud and cold... see more details here:

But mainly, I thought that it would be a great oportunity to help raising some money for Lucas, one of my children's friend who was diagnosed with Spastic Diplegia, a form of Cerebral Palsy. It makes his legs muscles very tight and therefore he cannot stand or walk without help. This is Lucas:

Lucas has a chance to be helped. Selective Dorsal Rhisotomy (SDR) is an operation developed in the United States that will relieve him of this tension, pain, and the need for further extensive orthopedic surgery. SDR will help his balance and be a step toward him walking independently.

Lucas has been accepted for SDR in St Louis Hospital, Missouri by the doctor who pioneered this operation. He was also recently referred to Great Ormond Street (GOSH) in London as a private patient. This operation is not funded by the NHS and neither is the extensive physiotherapy that will be needed as a follow up.

They need to raise just over £50,000 (a bit less if he's accepted at GOSH) by March 2014 and have already raised 63% thanks to all those wonderful people that made it their mission to help him. I just wanted to be part of this.
