Those who know me well know i'm quite in to my running, but in April 2014 i'm taking on my biggest challenge yet - the Brighton Marathon! It took me while to decide on which of the very many worthy causes out there I would dedicate my efforts to, but after Charlotte told me of her friend's struggle with Dystonia my mind was made up. I was shocked to hear of the severity of a condition which I had previously not been aware of, and unfortunately it is conditions such as these which need our support the most, precisely because of the lack of awareness.
Dystonia is a neurological movement condition which affects at least 70,000 people in the UK. The symptoms of dystonia are involuntary and often very painful muscle spasms caused by incorrect signals from the brain, in one part of the body and sometimes several different areas. It is a neurological disorder that affects movement, not intellect. It isn't rare - it is ten times more common than motor neurone disease, but many people have never heard of it, the causes are not fully understood, and tragically there is currently no known cure.
