Story
Lucas is an awesome little guy and his Mum and Dad, Mike and Sara, are fundraising in order to be able to pay for surgery that will allow him to walk, run and play a lot more easily. You can read more about him and the surgery at his webpage http://www.justgiving.com/Lucas-FindingMyFeet
I have been training throughout this summer to swim across the lake. I have a support boat and a great team to help of Dan, Mazen, and the boat provide by Laurent.
The swim is around 12km in total, and while I am no Diana Nyad (awesome lady btw!), and there are no sharks in the lake, it will be a long slog of around 4-5 hours in around 17oC water (n.b. I am wearing a wetsuit).
The swim is complete!
The swim took just under 4 hours, with 3 stops at 3,6 and 9 km points for refuelling. The start was a bit turbulent as I managed to swallow a mouthful of water getting out of the boat at Evian (I think I forgot I didn't have an aqualung) and also the winds are stronger on the Evian side. I also made the silly mistake of trying to use reasonably new equipment at the start (a centre snorkel) - but quickly replaced this with my old trusty side snorkel and managed to get going. I kept my direction by following a fishing line that was suspend 3m over the side of the boat and had luminous weight attached - following that for 4 hours suspended above the 300m green depths of the Lake was quite surreal! I found it really improtant to refuel regularly with carb gels as otherwise my stroke frequency and power would reduce significantly. Arrivign in Lausanne, it was amazing to have family and friends waiting for me at the side. Thanks all for your support!!!
