Story

Thanks for visiting our team fundraising page! On Thursday June 20th 2013, the GVI Seychelles Cap Ternay Expedition Base will compete in the 2nd Annual Raft Race for Rupees to raise much needed money for the Presidents Village Children's Home, GVI Seychelles’ Charitable Trust. Teams of staff and volunteers will race homemade rafts, inflatable tubes and li-los, and handcrafted battleships through a course in Mahe’s Baie Ternay Marine National Park. Teams will have to work together to float all of their members from end to end, beach to beach, and make sure their rafts come back in one piece. The challenge will be grueling but the victory will be sweet for one lucky, hard-working team. Most importantly, the event will raise funds and awareness for GVI’s work with the President’s Village Children’s Home. The Presidents Village Children’s Home cares for children who are orphans or have parents that are not able to look after them. Some have been abused while others have disabilities or learning difficulties. All are in need of care and the home provides a safe environment for them to live. The President’s Village is currently home to approximately 58 children, ages 6 months to 18 years. GVI volunteers do extra-curricular activities with children from the President’s Village as part of their expedition here in Seychelles. Volunteers take the kids out on weekly snorkels, teaching them about various marine creatures while having fun splashing around and giving the kids some much needed individual attention. Volunteers also do quarterly Creole Days at the President’s Village, which is a day of arts, crafts, fun and games for all of the children at the home. This spring, volunteers completed a new mural at the President’s Village, painting a colorful map of Seychelles on the wall. Money raised by volunteers goes to support all of these extra-curricular activities and more. At Christmas time, GVI buys gifts for each of the children. Throughout the year, GVI purchases much needed items such as clothing and school supplies and supports various trips for the children, helping them make memories that they wouldn’t otherwise have. Friends and family across the globe can support the volunteers and the President’s Village by making a donation online. All contributions are greatly appreciated and go directly to GVI’s President’s Village Charitable Trust account. Be sure to note your volunteer’s name in the comments section, as teams get bonus points for raising funds and prizes will be awarded to the top individual fundraisers. Help us reach our goal of £1000 by June 20, every little bit helps! So please dig deep and donate now.
