Story

My name is John Davies, father of Hannah. Thanks for taking time to visit my Just Giving Page.

My daughter Hannah has attended Moor House School since Sept 2009. Hannah presents with a complex combination of severe speech and language difficulties. Her difficulties profoundly affect most aspects of her daily living as well as her ability to access the National Curriculum.

Hannah has a severe phonological disorder. Her speech has qualities of dyspraxia and dysarthria. She has velopharyngel incompetence, a high palate and general low muscle tone which compound her difficulties with the production of particular speech sounds. Hannah's speech is difficult to understand and this affects her ability to interact socially. This in turn has a negative impact on her self-esteem. Her expressive language and receptive language are also severely impaired. Hannah has severe word finding difficulties within the context of general problems with memory. She has difficulties with expressive grammar and phonological processing which have a severe impact on development of her literacy skills.

My aim is too walk the 62 miles from London to Brighton walking through the night in June 2013, to raise funds for the Moor House School Development project to establish a Moor House Sixth Form College. This project is vital for Hannah's future education where she will continue to get the right professional expertise and become an independent functioning member of society.

I will be joined by my best mates for whom I've known for 33 years Darren, Colin and Gary.

Moor House School

Supporting students in the future

Moor House is a highly successful  school, however at the age of 16, pupils have had to leave MHS and transfer to other schools and colleges. This can create significant problems and challenges such as difficulties finding colleges providing the right professional expertise, journeying further away from their homes, the difficulties of forming of new relationships and disruption on their continuing education. Concerns arise regarding whether the young person will gain the right education to reach their potential in education, maintain their confidence and become an independent functioning member of society.

In response to these concerns, parental and student demands, as well as requests from the local community, Moor House has decided to extend its provision by opening Moor House College from September 2012.

The Development Project

The MHS Development Project involves establishing a Moor House Sixth Form College and replacing ageing poor quality “Portakabin” style buildings.

Phase One – The creation of residential facilities for 6 formers. Building works will be completed by September 2012. The Trustees of the school have already established funding for this Phase.

Phase Two – The creation of a new building that:

Provides additional teaching and therapy space for both the 7-16 year olds and the Sixth Form, and

Provides modern specialist rooms, such as for science, design technology, food technology, art, pottery, and music.

The school needs to raise £3,000,000 over the next two years to carry out Phase Two and create the facilities that it needs to support its growing number of Students.
