This will be my 5th London Marathon and after raising money for charities close to me for 3 of my previous marathons I have decided I would like to use my place to raise funds for another charity that has become important to me - Southend Hospital Charitable Foundation's Bosum Pals appeal.

The Charitable Foundation was established in 1998 by a group of local people who cared greatly about the Hospital and who wanted to help fund those extras that NHS funding can't provide.

The Bosom Pals Appeal raised £750,000 to improve breast screening services at Southend University Hospital and has enabled them to buy 2 full field digital mammography machines and associated IT equipment. This improved technology is helping to provide shorter examination times, better technique and image quality - helping to detect early and small cancers.

October 2011 saw the launch of an extension to the appeal - The Bosom Pals Appeal On The Road.

Bosom Pals On The Road Appeal needs to raise £500,000 for digital equipment for the mobile screening vans situated across South Essex. This will ensure women in South Essex going for routine screening get the same access to digital mammography as women screened at the hospital's breast unit.

As a member of Benfleet Running Club I have joined their team fundraising efforts for the Bosum Pals appeal in conjunction with their annual fundraising event 'The Kirste 5 Memorial Race (est. 2012).  The Bosum Pals appeal was very dear to Kirste and I'm sure some of you already know of the vital work the mobile breast screening unit carries out for the women of South Essex.
