Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I'm just one member of a large team who is taking part in the Wainwright Walk 2013.

The Wainwright Walk is an annual event to raise money for the University of Exeter Community Legal Helpdesk. The Helpdesk provides vital legal support and guidance to members of the public who don't qualify for legal aid but are unable to afford professional legal advice and representation and so have to represent themselves in court, often against legally trained professionals.

Recently, I helped a couple who were facing eviction defend a repossession claim from their mortgage company. After I had drafted and served the particulars of defence I attended court with the couple and managed to negotiate with the mortgage company for an out of court settlement and a new payment plan. Without my help the couple would have been trying to navigate the proceedings on their own and would probably have had to endure a traumatic court hearing. We also help people facing eviction, parents wanting contact with their children, we help in landlord / tenant disputes and much more.

The cuts to legal aid combined with increasing numbers of disputes create a high volume of unmet legal need, which is only going to increase further. The Helpdesk aims to meet this need in Exeter and the surrounding areas and support those who don't have access to legal representation. Any support you can give to this cause would go a long way towards ensuring that the Community Legal Helpdesk has a sustainable future and is able to continue helping people who otherwise might be denied access to justice.
