Story

I am Running the London Marathon 2013 in order to raise money, and awareness for the Pilgrims Hospices. My Granny has said shes not going to sleep worrying about how i'll do it, so i better get my running shoes on!!!!

On the 8th of August 2012 our Grandpa John Gann passed away comfortably and peacefully at Pilgrims Hospice Canterbury. Although this was a horrible time for all of us it has opened our eyes to what a wonderful job the Pilgrims Hospice does, and how important these organisations are to people at the end of their lives. Even more importantly I was completely unaware that these places were run through charitable donations and the work of volunteers.

For anyone who is lucky enough not to have come into contact with hospices or really know what they are the website states "Pilgrims Hospices provides care and support free of charge to people with life-limiting illnesses, their families and carers". The hospice allowed our grandpa to live his final few days in a comfortable calm place. The existence of the hospice meant that he didn't have to spend time unnecessarily in a hospital which he hated. Although the hospital had done a wonderful job, the care was based on making people better, and one never questions what people do or where they go when they’re not going to ‘get better’ but still need care before the situation arises. We could visit him any time, even the little things such as free parking and a beautiful garden to escape to make a difference when things are so hard.

Although we don't tend to talk much about death or wish to come into much contact with the subject, we think it’s important that people know that these organisations make the world of difference in horrible times, and allows the option of a place where a loved one can be cared for without having to be in hospital. Please donate anything you can, although this page is in memory of our Grandpa we hope to raise money so other people can receive the amazing care and compassion that he did and so their families have one thing less to worry about in such a worrying time.

Even if you don’t wish to donate please have a look at the work they do; http://www.pilgrimshospices.org/ .

Please keep an eye out for my blog which i will be writing in order for everyone who wishes to support this wonderful cause to keep track of how myself and we as a team are getting on with our training!
