Hi- This is my story. It was 1999, I was on a ski trip with my Dad and a bunch of mates during which Dad quietly mentioned to me that he was suffering with excruciating back ache.(Hitting that tree on that red run probably didn't help much - albeit a real cracking comedy moment)! On our return, Dad went for a check up at the Docs..... That was when his life changed forever! Tests showed that his back pain was caused by a huge tumor pushing against his spine. Later, he learned this was a bypass of Multiple Myeloma or Bone Cancer. I will never forget hearing those words for the first time! This was the start of an epic journey, one which tested my Dads grit, determination and character to the very end. (Those of you who knew my Dad, will appreciate that this was what he was all about – Grit and Determination)! He had all the best treatment he could wish for, all the love, support and help in the world from his family and friends not to mention UCH Hospital and in the latter stages Macmillan CS, but unfortunately nothing in the world could stop that cancer spreading and Dads condition deteriorated quickly in 2008 and inevitably in March 2009 I lost him forever.... What will stay in my mind for years to come is the way two Macmillan nurses helped my Dad spend his last moments in the comfort of his own home and pass away with dignity and respect with his loved ones by his side. That was Dads wish and he always said, that he would rather die at home as apposed to a Hospital ward somewhere. With the assistance of Macmillan, this was attainable. (It was very important that this was done correctly). That is why I have chosen to run for this Charity and give something back to this prodigious organization..... On running: Dad ran a sub 4 hour "Mars Marathon" in 1984 and entered the race again with his close friend/biz partner Keith 2 years later.  So now it`s my turn and on the 21/04/13 I will be thinking of Dad during every step of the way.
