Story

I plan to hike a  32 mile section of Missouri's Ozark Trail. This will be a strenuous hike over rough terrain, and is likely to take 3 full days, during which period I will be camping in the woods. I am likely to be walking in temperatures of up to 40 degrees Celsius and humidity levels in excess of 75%. The only food and equipment I will have access to will be what I can carry with me. I will complete the circle back to my starting point on the 4th day with an 18 mile canoe trip, which should take around 11 hours. And I'm doing it all for Alfie! I've never done anything like this before, and I'm fully anticipating it to be a big challenge for me, but I know it's nothing compared to what Alfie, many other children I worked with at Yorkhill, and other children all over the world have been through.

Alfie is four years old, and the sweetest little boy you could imagine. He is always happy, smiling and full of beans. I had the pleasure of teaching Alfie while he received treatment at The Royal Hospital for Sick Children (Yorkhill Children's Hospital) in Glasgow for Stage 4 Neuroblastoma, and he truly touched my heart. Alfie's parents, Cheree and Steven, would do anything just to help their little boy get better, so that he can grow up and achieve his dream - to become a firefighter! I want to help them with that, but I can only do that if you help me.

Since being diagnosed in September 2011, Alfie has undergone numerous tests, had a central line inserted and been through several courses of chemotherapy. Despite what he has been through, he remains braver and more cheerful than you could possibly imagine. Although Alfie's most recent tests have shown that the cancer has finally started responding to the latest round of treatment, Alfie's best chance for survival now lies in travelling to Germany for immunotherapy.

The proposed treatment is not funded by Britain's National Health Service, and this is where you can help. The therapy Alfie needs is likely to cost in excess of £80,000. Alfie's family and friends are working tirelessly to achieve this, but they are going to need all the help they can get.

Even if you can only give a very small amount, every penny counts, and you will be making a very real difference to this little boys' life.
