We fund research into SMA to help find a cure and treatments

Story

On Sunday 15th July we will be doing a sponsored Diamond Jubilee Walk to raise money for the SMA Trust that raises money to fund research into finding a cure for this devastating muscle wasting condition that children like our cousin David suffer from.  Please help us to raise as much money as possible.

SMA affects motor neurons in the spinal cord. This results in muscular weakness, leading to severe disability and the possibility of premature death. There are four types of SMA, three of which affect babies and children. Sadly, more babies die from Type I SMA than from any other genetic condition in the UK today. Very few babies with Type I survive past their second birthday.

Many children with Type II SMA, due to modern medical management, have a much longer life span and can survive into their teens and beyond. Type III SMA is a bit slower in its progression than Type II, but sometimes only slightly. However, the child’s health can be fragile and they may need around the clock care to maintain their well-being.

SMA is a genetic disease that affects motor neurones. 1:40 of us is a carrier and in its most severe form children rarely live beyond 2 – making SMA the leading genetic cause of death in babies and toddlers. The SMA Trust is solely dedicated to funding research into a cure and treatments for SMA
