We fund two clinics in Bhopal to help the survivors of the 1984 Disaster

Story

I'm Veronica and I am a student at the University of Sussex. I've heard about the Brighton Marathon from a friend who subscribed and I joined the group. I had never heard about Bhopal and the terrible situation in that city before.

Watching the documentary Bhopal, one of my first activities with the Group I have discovered what happened (you can find info on http://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Bhopal-Medical-Appeal/176365402876 or http://www.bhopal.org/ ):

On 3rd December 1984, a cloud of toxic gas leaked from a Union Carbide pesticide plant and spread across the city of Bhopal, India. 8,000 people died within days. In the years since, the death toll has risen to more than 25,000.

The disaster site was never cleaned up and the remaining toxic waste continues to contaminate the area. Dangerous levels of toxic chemicals are now even found in the drinking water of many tens of thousands of people.

This is Bhopal's SECOND DISASTER.

The Bhopal Medical Appeal is a UK Charity that funds both the Sambhavna Clinic and the Chingari Rehabilitation Centre in Bhopal.

The Sambhavna clinic is the only place that gives free health care to survivors of the 1984 disaster, as well as the victims of the present day water poisoning, whilst the Chingari Rehabilitation Centre deals specifically with the rehabilitation of second and third generation children born damaged as a result of the 1984 disaster or the present day water contamination.

Greenpeace labelled this dasester site as one of the 'G;lobal Toxic Hotspots' and we are committed to seeing an end to the toxic contamination that continues to poison the city.

I'm not a sporty person at all, and I've always procastinated the moment for me to change my lifestyle because I didn't see a reason good enough to do so. After watching the documentary I decided that the efford to prepare for and run the marathon to raise funds for the Bhopal Medical appeal was worthy. So, here I am.

The Bhopal Medical Appeal funds two clinics in Bhopal, India, offering first class health care to anybody affected by the 1984 Bhopal Gas Disaster or by the ongoing disaster that sees thousands of people drinking water contaminated with toxic chemicals.
