Well it's the first week of February, 2012, and donations are still coming in. The total is £356.00.

When I have explained to people why I've got no hair in the depths of winter (!) they have been most generous- including people whose homes I have visited to fit smoke alarms in my job with Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service!

I am deeply humbled by the generosity of people.

More good news, the events team at Liverpool Anglican Cathedral have given us the green light to host our Massed Bands and Choir concert there at the end of the year, and a young colleabue Ash Loftus, who is going through the process of selection to be a Royal Navy officer, is being the team leader on our sponsored walk round all the Merseyside fire stations in August.

NEW YEAR'S DAY, 2012: UPDATE-

THANKS TO A DONATION BY KAREN WALSH, MY TOTALISER HAS NOW PASSED THE 300.00 MARK, MANY THANKS.

I intend to keep my head shaved till the end of January when all the off line donations will have been turned into on line donations and paid in, on behalf of all those people who have given me cash and not donated on line, that's so far 125.00.

I can't thank you enough for getting my fund raising year off to a flying start xxx

UPDATE-

30TH DECEMBER 2011- TOTAL NOW 291.00!!!

On Wednesday 28th December I decided that, as I had already exceeded my target by 26.00, the hair clippers should make an appearance!

The scary bit was having to get my hair cut off with scissors first, or else the clippers would have struggled to get through it. As the first locks were lifted up and the scissors were poised, I nearly chickened out!

Before long however, it was ready for the clippers, and when I looked in the mirror at the end, I was surprised and liberated by the experience!

An actress once said- it could have been Demi Moore, who shaved her head for the film G.I. Jane- that all women should shave their heads once in their lives. It is by turns terrifying, humbling, exciting, and even revitalising.

Thank you to all the people who have donated generously to this mad project, and thank you in advance to the new wave of donors who, seeing my bald bonce on Facebook, have started to give even more money.

BOXING DAY 2011- TOTAL NOW 226.00!!

This is the first of a series of fund raising events I will be running over the course of 2012. It's the year of the Olympics so this is my own marathon challenge.

Cystic Fibrosis is the most common, genetic, inherited condition in the UK. People who have it have to cope with thickening of their mucous membranes, making it difficult for their lungs and other organs to work efficiently.

In my own lifetime the age of young people who have CF has risen steadily from just 5 years of age to at least 35 years. Medication and treatment is improving year on year, but there MUST be more research into the condition.

Young people with the condition have to be admitted to hospital on a regular basis, and take in a multitude of tablets to manage their condition. They also need rigorous physiotherapy throughout the day to clear their lungs of thick mucous that makes it difficult for them to breathe.

If more research could be funded, then this condition may not be a thing of the past, but it would certainly be held in check more efficiently.

In summary, me walking around with no hair for a few weeks is nothing compared with what these kids have to deal with. It's a minor inconvenience for me.

If it raises funds and gets my CF 2012 challenge off to a good start well, that'll make me very happy.
