Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

On behalf of Leonard Cheshire Disability, I am running not one, but TWO marathons, in addition to a 70km cross-country relay race.

First up was the Kielder Marathon. Considered "Britain's most beautiful marathon", the Kielder Marathon takes place off-road and follows the 27 mile shoreline of Kielder Water in Northumberland.

A tough choice for my first marathon, and it was certainly hard going. I was aiming for sub-4 hours, and at 13 miles was well on target. At about 15 the IT Band (something I didn't know existed a few months back and now refer to on a regular basis) in my left leg went - a niggling training injury - and i had to hobble around the final 10 miles or so. Still, I finished, and set myself an easily beatable PB for London!

Up next, on 22nd April 2012, was the London Marathon. The world's greatest marathon event, it attracted around 36,000 runners last year, and holds the Guinness world record as the largest annual fund raising event in the world.

An utterly different beast from Kielder. Flat, glorious sunshine, and with roaring crowds lining the route. Sunburn was an unexpected outcome!

Finally, I took part in the Emsworth to Basingstoke cross-country relay, with 5 other brave souls. Covering 70km up, down, and across muddy Hampshire, we finished a respectable 10th of 20 teams, and the only team not made up of club runners. Pink neon tutus certainly helped us stand out, and we collected a good amount for great causes on the day.

Training for, let alone running, two marathons was an enormous challenge. But given the good cause, I was willing to break the pain barrier. You don't need to break it with me, just sit back comfortably, and toss some cash my - and Leonard Cheshire's - way.
