We work to save the African lion to ensure viable populations exist

Story

Hi everyone,

Thank you for visiting my Just Giving Page, set this up to raise as much money as I can to provide funding directly to ALERT (African Lion and Environmental Research Trust) to support their essential program of rehabilitation and release into the wild, of African lions.

This page is now dedicated to my beloved mum who loved the lions and always supported my small contribution to ALERT's work. She loved ALERT's work and when she left this world it was her request that only immediate family flowers would be present as we say goodbye, and anyone who wished to bid her farewell could donate to ALERT in her memory, as then she lives on within a worthy cause she believed in. We respect her wishes and please leave her a message here if you wish.

Mum lives on in our hearts and memories and will walk with me forever, keeping me strong with her continuous love for her family, friends and the world's wildlife.

Read more about why I am continuing to raise funds for ALERT:

If you ask most people to name an animal which roams free in the wilds of Africa they will usually say LIONS, but sadly due to hunting, disease, and the destruction of their habitat, the lion population has decreased 80-90% in the last 30 years! If this continues there is a strong likelihood that lions could disappear completely, within our lifetimes, and certainly for future generations. We can't let this happen!

ALERT is an inspiring conservation project, working directly with lions, whilst also supporting the local children and their communities, through education, employment, and localised environmental projects.

They are passionate about the conservation of lions, and work tirelessly caring for captive bred lions, which progresses them through a program, resulting in their eventual release into suitable semi wild environments. Their cubs (who are born wild and have no direct human contact) will eventually be released within areas where the lion population has decreased substantially, or been lost, where they can live the natural, free, wild, lives they deserve.

I worked as a volunteer with ALERT in April and December 2011, and May and December 2012, and had the opportunity of direct involvement with the daily tasks undertaken to ensure the development, welfare and happiness of the lions in the project.

It is the most amazing privilege to be able to walk with these magnificent animals, interact with them, and observe their progress, as they venture out into the picturesque landscape, where they develop their natural instincts, which will eventually enable them to be members of a self sufficient pride.

I watched them eat, play, explore, and sleep (they like to sleep!) I’ve cleaned enclosures and helped in other areas working within the local community with children and adults on their conservation projects, which are mutually beneficial to the African people and all the surrounding wildlife.

In December 2013 I returned as a research student and returned as a research intern April 2014.

Thanks to the passion and continuous commitment of all the people at ALERT the African lion population can be conserved and increased, but they still need large amounts of money to continue this valuable work.

Please donate as much as you can, every little counts and is very much appreciated!

Your money will directly contribute towards saving the lions, and you can enjoy following their progress through the ALERT websites.

Together we can make a difference and secure the future of the African lions.

Many thanks

Mickey xx
