We are an appeal of the ICR and raise funds to make the discoveries that defeat cancer

Story

A team of modern day mods from Reaseheath College are revving up for a two wheeled challenge to raise awareness of male cancer.

The fundraising trip is a sponsored 600 mile trip on scooters to the Isle of Arran and back.

The team of Jon Jones, Neil Jewell, Lee Brown, Rupert Harris, Justin Connor and Dave Riley, who all instruct in the college’s engineering and motor vehicle departments, Vice Principal Dave Kynaston and Rupert’s son George, also an engineer, will take to the open roads on Easter Sunday. They will be supported by engineering instructor Mike Cullen, who will drive a college minibus.

The team aim to complete the trip within five days and plan to camp en route. Each rider is limited to a scooter that cost £100 or less and has a limited engine capacity of no more than 100cc. Their route will avoid motorways and take them through the Lake District to Carlisle, on to Dumfries and then to Ardrossan where they will board the ferry to the Isle of Arran.

Money raised by the epic ride will go to the Everyman Male Cancer campaign which aims to raise awareness of testicular and prostate cancer and supports research into the disease. The team have already been promised over £1,800 in sponsorship but are hoping to raise more.

Explained Jon Jones: “I’ve been thinking of doing a scooter run like this for charity for some time. The rest of the team have really taken it on board and there has been a lot of fine tuning of the scooters. We’re hoping that there won’t be too many running repairs during the trip, but we’re ideally placed if anything does go wrong.

“We wanted to do something different and have some fun while raising money for a good cause. We’re just hoping that we can put up with eight hours a day sitting on a hard seat listening to a whining two stroke engine.”

Everyman is an appeal run by The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR). Every year some 10,000 men lose their lives to prostate cancer and over 2,000 others have their world turned upside down by a diagnosis of testicular cancer. These men are the reason we are fundraising for male specific cancers.
