Story

Why did you get sent this link?

Thanks for asking! Anyone who knows me knows that I'm more likely to spend my Sundays in mountain pose or climbing an indoor rock wall than scaling an actual mountain. However in the name of saving my friends the sea turtles, seals and dolphins, in October I will be hiking through one of the most challenging and remote ranges in Europe - the Accursed Mountains.

This will be a physically and mentally demanding journey, clocking up 60km across three days including:

  • Climbing Zla Kolata, the highest peak in Montenegro (2,534m, double the height of Snowdon in Wales)
  • Crossing the triple border point between Albandia, Kosovo and Montenegro - which means no electricity, no toilets and no roads
  • Carrying my full pack 30kg pack during the day (hello shoulders and abs!), and learning about local traditions at night

Acre's tourism will benefit some of the least developed Eastern European Nations ravaged by war and communism, as we visit rural and unexplored communities in Albania and Kosovo.

I'm super passionate about having a culturally approach to sustainability so I will be using this trip to educate myself as much as possible!

What's this all about?

We all need to do our part. More than 8 million tonnes of plastic are dumped into our oceans each year. Over 90% of sea birds surveyed have been found with plastic in their stomachs.

I like oceans and cute birds - but why does this affect me?

That's 51 trillion pieces of plastic that are now estimated to be floating around out there now, with microplastics being unearthed in our snow, rain, food chain and drinking water. You probably have been eating and drinking plastic like our friends the sea birds without even knowing. That's messed up!

So I'm doing something to try and help. For you, for our planet, for the sea animals.

The point of this is I really need you to donate some cash. Doesn't have to be much. A fiver. A tenner. A hundred if you're feeling like a legend. In any currency. I care so much about this issue, and I'm putting myself through a darn hard physical challenge. Make it worth my while!

How does your  donation help?

By supporting Plastic Oceans, you're facilitating education, science and sustainability programmes that will create a wave of change. Through changing attitudes, behaviours and practices on plastic use, we can stop plastic pollution reaching the ocean within a generation. Or that one piece of plastic you may have dropped today!

NB: Let's be straight up here mate - your donation does not go towards paying for my trip. Acre and I have covered the costs of the expedition (plus offset of our carbon footprint!), so all money raised goes directly to Plastic Oceans.

No matter how big or small, hit the DONATE link above to help a mate and keep plastic out of your fish (or nori) and chips!
