I am a serving police officer and through my career like many of my colleagues we end up experiencing some of the tragic events life throws at our communities and we professionally manage those expectations. Sadly there are times when we become affected by a tragic loss that affects us personally as well as professionally.
In March 2004 whilst I was a serving police officer in Surrey Police a colleague and a friend PC Richard Gunn left us, he was responding to an emergency assistance by colleagues and whilst on his way he was involved in a fatal accident.
I remember Richard not just as a Police officer, but also a friend, he was a very funny, very kind person who between us would often get told off by the Inspector at briefing for our humour. He was one of those rare people that affected everyone in a positive way. I was truly lucky to know him and I know his passing affected so many of us so deeply, even after all these years he is never forgotten. I know that even to this day his picture sits in the each mantlepiece of those who ever worked with him.
But even since then there have been other colleagues who I have known that have left us and that is why the Care Of Police Survivors Charity (COPS) is such a worthwhile cause.
Richards father is the national president of the charity and they offer peer support and counselling to those left behind at a time when it is most needed.
Therefore this year I have decided to ride in the Police Unity Tour which is over two days, covering around 180 miles and riding in memory of fallen colleagues with us ending up at the National Memorial Arboretum, Staffordshire. I will be riding in memory of PC Richard GUNN.
Please support me in this challenge, I would be so grateful for any contribution.
