Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page!
Survivors Of Bereavement by Suicide (SOBS) is a charity that’s done so much for me. Now it’s my turn to give back so other people can benefit from the same advice and support that’s helped me so much.
In May 2014, my father (Tom) committed suicide after two years of battling lung cancer. It was completely unexpected and left me and my mom unsure of how to handle our grieving process. Suicide is an uncomfortable topic, and I found it hard to talk about with anyone despite having such loving and supportive friends and family.
Even a year ago, talking about my dad (even the happy times and good memories of him) was hard. This was devastating as I wanted to be able to talk about him and share his stories and misadventures (of which there are many) with the people I love without being upset about the circumstances of his death.
In September 2018, it was suggested to me by a loved one that I speak to someone about how I was feeling and the struggles I was facing. I accessed SOBS for advice and support, which completely changed how I was handling (or not handling) the grieving process. It was incredibly helpful and healing to speak to, and read stories from, people who understood everything I was feeling. While I still miss my dad, I now enjoy telling people about his colourful life, dry sense of humour and his penchant for winding people up.
In his memory, and to raise money for Survivors Of Bereavement by Suicide, I will be attempting the National Three Peaks Challenge with the Peaky Climbers! We will be attempting to climb the highest peaks in Scotland (Ben Nevis), England (Scafell Pike) and Wales (Snowden) IN JUST 24 HOURS. That’s 23 miles of walking and 3064 metres of assent – plus we have to travel between all these places! Fingers crossed for good weather and no traffic.
