Story

"I had been wanting to do something in honour of my father; he passed away last year and I had been searching for something that I felt would explain what he meant to me, and honour in some way what his life was about. My father was a staunch family man, along with being a GP in a local practice for 38 years and as a Doctor for the Territorial Army for over 30 years. It wasn’t until he passed away in April 2018 that I found out he received the Territorial Declaration Honour and Distinction during his career, or did I appreciate his dedication and commitment to the British Army.

When I was a young boy, I remember my dad often going away with the TA on weekend camps and attending regimental dinners at Maindy Barracks, Cardiff. On the rare occasion, I enjoyed going to the barracks with him, but apart from family members the TA was a very little known part about his life to anyone else, however it was a large part of his life. Going through his possessions recently, seeing his army uniform crisp and clean, brought a pleasing trip down memory lane for my mam and me and evoked different memories for both of us, of what my Dad was about.

It was because of my dad’s support that I became an avid golfer, he and mam introduced me to the sport at the age of 11 and actively followed and encouraged me to play it from that very early age. So, when I came across the 75 hole golf challenge which incorporated my families love of golf and my dad’s long link to the Army, I thought it was a fantastic fit to honour him, his passions and he would be proud of me fundraising for a great cause.

Since meeting Peter Davies of the ABF Soldiers Charity, seeing his passion and learning about the Charities journey, it has certainly strengthened my resolve in doing this challenge and raising as much money as possible for the Charity that exist to ensure all soldiers, veterans and their immediate families can live a life of independence and dignity.

This is my story, but, you don’t need a reason to join this challenge, if you have a love of golf and want to support our soldiers who have, and, would go that extra mile for our country then please sign up to take on the 75th D-day Challenge and help fundraise for this fantastic cause."
