Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

As most of you will know, Cancer has played a huge part in my life over recent recent years.

1. 7 years ago I lost my father in law to cancer of the liver after an incredibly short illness. Mick  was diagnosed on Christmas Eve 2010 and died very shortly after, on January 15th 2011.

2. In May 2013 my father was diagnosed with bladder cancer. He was operated on and at first it was hoped that the cancer had been caught in time. Unfortunately this wasn't the case and later in 2013 we were told that it had spread to his lungs & liver and that he could have treatment, but this would only be to prolong his life.

3. In October 2013 I was personally diagnosed with Stage IV throat cancer after months of being told by my GP that I had tonsillitis!

3 days after my father started his treatment in November 2013, I started my own course of chemotherapy treatments. This was followed by Radiotherapy treatments from December through to the start of February 2014.

As a result of my treatments I lost nearly 4 stones (25kg), dropping from almost 15 stones (95kg) down to 11 stones (70kg) and spent a number of days at hospital over the period due to becoming neutropenic as a result of the chemo, and then  contracting the dreaded norovirus.

I had a fantastically loving wife, a wonderful family & great friends who all helped me through these really tough times, and amongst it all was a really great man - Dad. Not just a brilliant father, but also one of my closest friends.

He was a true inspiration for me during my illness and I know that I was a great help to him too. He surpassed all expectations and managed to achieve so much in his last 12 months, but sadly for us all, he passed away on 11th September 2014, just before his 72nd birthday.

I am one of the lucky ones and will be 5 years clear next March, so it's my time to help with the battles against this dreadful disease.

In June 2017, I cycled from London to Paris with 10 others, including another  inspirational guy who many of you will know - Peter Sowerby. Pete had been diagnosed with Prostate Cancer, but unfortunately for him it was caught too late and spread to his bones. He sadly died in early April this year, but what he achieved in his last 12 months was spectacular - completing the London Marathon, London to Paris cycle ride, 3 mile swim in the Atlantic, 5.5 mile swim in Lake Consiston, numerous long cycle rides, plus the Woburn triathlon and Great North run on the same weekend!  Pete's efforts will undoubtedly help me get me through this challenge and the awareness of Prostate Cancer that was raised from last year's cycle ride has already saved the life of one person - one of the very same guys that rode from London to Paris was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer at a very early stage and cured!

For this event, i'm looking to raise money for Macmillan., to help with the incredible work that I saw them do, at first hand, when Mick was diagnosed back in December 2010. We all know somebody who will have benefitted from their fantastic work.

25 - 30 of us will set off from La Manga on a 200 mile journey into and around the Sierra Espuna, which i've been informed is rather hilly! We've set a target of £22,500 to raise between us all, and your generous contributions, no matter how large or small will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance!
