Story
Dear Friends
In October 2017, Michael and I had the most enjoyable time participating in the second 10-mile Ipswich Defeat Dementia Walk and raised the quite amazing amount of £720 for Alzheimer’s Research UK, thanks to so many wonderful, kind, generous donations. We took part because my Mum, Margaret, was diagnosed with Dementia in late 2014. She died from the disease on Christmas Eve 2017.
So, with a cause so close to my heart, I have to give the Walk another go this year! On Saturday 13th October I will be going solo and attempting the newly added Half Marathon route - that’s 13.1 miles around the streets of Ipswich. Oh heck!
Dementia is a heartbreaking disease and seeing Mum waste away before my eyes (with depression, fear, loss of interest in absolutely everything, sometimes refusing food and drink) over those three years was probably harder, more cruel, more agonising than when she passed away. I mourned her for those three years - I missed her then and I miss her now, beyond words... As her daughter I never thought it possible that I would wish her to leave me - but she had suffered so terribly, no longer knew how to be happy, no longer enjoyed anything in life, had wasted away to under 5 st in weight - so her passing was truly the kindest release possible...
So many friends, colleagues and relatives were so incredibly generous last year and I am acutely aware of my absolute cheek to ask again, but if anyone would like to sponsor me on my Half Marathon promenade/plod/perambulation, I would be beyond grateful. To start the ball rolling and to put my money where my mouth is - and to prove just how important the Walk and raising money for Alzheimer’s Research UK is to me - I am putting £50 into the pot.
Sadly, Dementia doesn’t pick and choose who it will take next - the only way to beat it is through research.
Thank you so, so much.
This is all for you, Mum... ❤️
With love, Liz xxx
