Story

On the 13th of October me and mum will be participating in this years half marathon defeat dementia walk around Ipswich. All the money we raise through this walk will go to such a great cause to help the families of those who are dealing with this cruel disease.

My connection to dementia: In 2009 my grandad was diagnosed with dementia and over the years it rapidly got worse, with forgetting our names to slowly not talking about much at all, apart from going up the hill back to his home town, his mug, and the army days to finally nothing at all and just a shell of a man. I had the privilege to have spent days looking after him when he needed me the most, Id take him out shopping with me (yes we would get some looks that a teenager was taking her grandfather out alone and having to deal with the same questions over and over again and all the other issues that came with the dementia), go for a walk (he was alway an active man), make him a cuppa and a biscuit (always in his garfunkels mug ) or just to sit there with and look at our watches ( it was always 6 o'clock ). Looking after him were honestly the best days of my life and he made me proud every day. Its made me become such a better person, and realise how much life has to give me. He moved into a care home two years ago and was cared by the best people possible and who gave him all he ever needed when he needed it. A year ago in September Grandad passed away and it has been the toughest thing I have ever had to deal with in my life so far, but without the support from my friends and family it could have been tougher.  Im doing this walk in memory of him

My Nannie and other Grandad now have signs of dementia too, which however hard it is to deal with we have the best support that we could ever need.

Me and my best friend have helped each other out so much over the years on having to deal with tough times in relation to our grandparents. With both dealing with the same things in our life we would bounce off each other and help out as much as we could, even if all we needed was a cuppa and a long old chat about everything. I honestly thank her so so much for all the help she has given.

So heres to the 13 miles we have to take on...

Remember every penny counts to such a great cause and will benefit so many people.

Love, Hugs and Handshakes!

Thanks xxx
