Story

Thank you for visiting my Sheffield Half Marathon Just Giving page in support of the Sheffield Scanner.

On Sunday 8th April 2018 I'll be taking part in the Run For All Sheffield Half Marathon as part of the University of Sheffield team.  We're raising funds for the University's £2 million campaign to bring an MRI-PET scanning facility to Sheffield, the first of its kind in Yorkshire.

More information about the Sheffield Scanner can be found at www.sheffield.ac.uk/sheffieldscanner.

My mum has been fighting melanoma skin cancer for about 6 years now, and, as she lives in Suffolk not Yorkshire, has been able to benefit from the MRI and PET scanners there.  However even then she has had to travel between Norwich, Ipswich and Colchester hospitals for PET and MRI scans as the scanners are in different hospitals.  These scans have been absolutely vital in picking up new tumours (they can detect any mass 5mm or bigger), checking the size of current ones and generally putting her mind at rest at her 3 monthly check-ups.  She has now just started different treatment and will continue to need these scans to monitor the effectiveness.

Yorkshire is going to benefit so much from having a combined MRI/PET scanner - please help me raise as much as I can!

We'll be among thousands of runners who'll descend on the city's streets on 8th April.  With a city centre start and finish, the Sheffield Half Marathon route will take us out of the city along Ecclesall Road, up the long hill beyond Hunter's Bar (it is soooo long!), along Knowle Lane and Ringinglow Road up to the Norfolk Arms, just a few metres from the Peak District National Park, before turning left, flattening out and then descending back into Sheffield down the same stretch of Ecclesall Road towards the finish line back in the city centre.

More information about the Sheffield Half Marathon can be found at https://www.runforall/events/half-marathon/sheffield-half-marathon/.

So please support us by donating to this fantastic cause which will have a terrific impact on everyone in Sheffield, South Yorkshire and beyond.
