Story
Hi, we are "Team Ulri-car" taking this ageing Saab 93 2.0 SE convertible out for one last ride. Raising money to help the planets charity fund (part of Southampton Hospital Charity) equip a second operating theatre at Southampton Gen Hospital to take intra operative electron beam radiotherapy (IOERT). We already have one operating theatre using this machine to give patients radiotherapy during cancer surgery, but opening a Second operating theatre will double our capacity to deliver this revolutionary Life saving treatment. Please read about the journey that we are going to take on this crazy challenge and donate to a fantastic cause.
About team Ulri-car:
Neil Pearce, co-founder of planets charity fund and specialist in liver, pancreatic and neuroendocrine cancer.
Jim Byrne, oesophageal and stomach cancer surgeon
Paul Newborough, commercial building contractor and World Rally car champion
We're about to embark on a two day 500 mile Challenge taking this barely road legal old girl from Southampton to Loch Lomond with the aim of raising at least £5000 towards the cost of this operating theatre. There are going to be endless top gear style capers and no doubt disasters en route. We will try and keep you all supplied with pictures on the planet's Facebook and twitter pages.
We were seduced by this ageing Swedish beauty and named her Ulri-car in honour of our favourite 1990s TV star. I quote from her advert on auto trader
"this ageing Swedish model is 20 years passed her prime but still willing to please. She wheezes, smokes more than she should and is always thirsty. She looks a bit dirty and has a rusty bottom, but she's very clean inside and if you press the right buttons she will still take her top down and comfortably take two in the front and one in the back for a long ride"
How could we resist! She benefits from a towbar and clearly has done a lot of pulling in the past. With 250,000 miles on the clock she's made for comfort not for speed these days and is always running hot. There was a lot of banging going on when we first took her home and it became clear that she was quite loose (only one engine mount left), however Paul has had a look inside, remounted her and she's a lot smoother and quieter now. We are going to give her a facelift, and spoiler rotten, so she may look a little different when you see her on the roads.
Many thanks for taking the time to read this and we really hope that you will support us on this trip and donate to this very worthy cause.
