On September 27th, a group of us from the waste industry will be cycling from Ghent to Amsterdam, we rode to Ghent last year so though it would be nice to set off from where we left off. We will be covering 300km in 3 days which will not be easy considering my bike has been collecting dust for over a year!!
This year I am raising money for Kidney Research UK. The reason behind this is my brother in law Chris has recently been diagnosed with stage four Chronic Kidney Disease(CKD). This means he will have to undergo a Kidney transplant within the next few months. Up until a couple of months ago, Chris was a normal healthy 34 year old, it was only due to a couple of small heart palpitations that he decided to get checked out at the doctor. It transpired that his heart was fine but the tests showed an abnormality with his Kidney function. From that point, Chris spent a week going in and out of hospital having tests. Amazingly, Chris had no symptoms of stage one, two or three CKD. The next stage of this disease is Kidney failure which can mean all sorts of complications. Thankfully Chris has noticed in time and is now under close supervision from Guys in London.
Kidney Research UK say "Kidney Disease is a silent killer, there are 3 million people in the U.K. With it right now and there is no cure!"
The future looks good for Chris post transplant, people can usually live a normal life with a donor Kidney, but he faces a scary time ahead.
Kidney Research UK is the leading charity dedicated to research into kidney disease in the UK. They rely almost wholly on the generous donations of the UK public and we believe that everybody deserves a life free of kidney disease.
