Story

One of Cllr Gareth Eales' first engagements as Deputy Mayor was to attend Alfie Bear's Picnic, the annual fundraising event. The event was so well-organised and had so much heart, that the memory of it really stuck with him throughout the year and when it came to choosing his Mayor's Charity he knew this local choice would be a very worthy cause.

Alfie Bear's Journey Fund is a supporter group of The Brain Tumour Charity which raises funds to support cutting edge research to find a cure and treatments for brain tumours.

The fund was established by Zoe and Danny Thomas whose son, Alfie, was diagnosed with Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG) aged five. DIPG is a highly aggressive form of cancer for which there is currently no treatment; it accounts for 80 per cent of all brain tumour deaths in children in the UK.
