Story
This Lent, the joint parishes of St Marie's and St Bernadette's in Standish and Shevington will be taking on the Walk for Water Challenge to raise money for CAFOD.
We will be walking 10,000 steps a day - before 9am!! - for 40 days to raise money for CAFOD's work around the world.
Today, more than 780 million people around the world do not have access to clean, safe drinking water.
One such person is Abdella, a young man from Ethiopia, who walks across treacherous terrain for 10 hours a day with the simple aim of collecting dirty water to keep his family alive.
But like many of us, Abdella is a young man with hopes and dreams of his own. He dreams of starting his own business, his own family.
He said: “People who have water near to them can do many things. I cannot compete with them or do other things because my life is taken up with making this journey to water.”
But there is hope. With help from charities and organisations such as CAFOD, people like Abdella can reap the benefits of change and flourish in a new life of opportunity.
To raise money to support their work, we will be walking 10,000 steps a day (approx. 5 miles) for each of the 40 days of Lent.
As an extra challenge, we will be completing our steps before 9am each morning, in tribute to Abdella who has to set out before sunrise to avoid the merciless heat of the Ethiopian sun.
Times are hard, but anything you can spare to help CAFOD’s work transforming lives for people like Abdella will be so gratefully received.
